Starting a Cottage Food Business

Posted by Kendra Patton on

Before you take that plunge into a home based bakery, make sure you are aware of your states cottage food laws.  There is more to it than just baking and selling.  There are laws that protect the public when it comes to being a Cottage Food Operation.  In Georgia, you must Provide proof of citizenship with an affidavit posted on the http://www.agr.georgia.gov/index.html website.  You also must take a food hygiene and safety class and receive a certificate of completion. Then your Kitchen must be inspected before you even pay for the license.  you must also have labels showing the contents of your goods and any allergy related contents must be on the product you are selling. You may not ship baked goods as a Cottage Food Operation in the State of Georgia, they must pass from your hands directly to the customer.
